11th IUSTI World Congress 9th - 12th November 2009, Cape Town, South Africa.

The conference will take place at the world famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, under the shadow of the iconic Table Mountain. It promises to be a truly exceptional event. The theme of the conference will be "STI's: Old Problems and New Solutions" with parts of the scientific programme strongly linked to STI issues facing Africa as well as other IUSTI Regions.  Given the importance of HIV/AIDS in Africa, there will be more focus on HIV than is perhaps usually the case in IUSTI world meetings.  The meeting will be held in the Board of Executives Conference Facility, which houses 320 delegates.  This conference is expected to be popular, so we would advise you to register early to ensure a place.

Registration will be from 09.00 to 17.00 on Monday 9th November.  There will be two pre-meeting HIV symposia on the day of registration from 14:00 to 16:45 (afternoon registration will be available for this particular event.

On the evening of Monday 9th November, there will be an opening lecture entitled “Africa: what have we learnt?” which will be delivered by Professor David Mabey, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.  Professor Mabey has many years of practical experience working and researching in Africa and is a leading world authority in his field.  There will be a welcome reception with an African Theme on the Monday night. Plenary and breakout parallel sessions will be allocated for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. The conference will close on the afternoon of 12th November with the closing lecture "STIs: old problems and new solutions” which we hope will be presented by Professor King Holmes, Head of the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington.  Professor King Holmes will also take over from Professor Angelika Stary as the next IUSTI World President at the Cape Town meeting.

The initial call for abstracts will be March 2nd 2009 with a submission deadline of 1st June 2009.  The deadline for advance registration is July 24th 2009. The conference website is www.iusti.co.za .

Accommodation will include several recommended hotels at the Cape Town Waterfront, and there are numerous excellent restaurants within 5 minutes walking distance of the conference venue.  The conference organizers can assist with advice regarding tours to Kruger National Park, the Winelands, the Cape Garden Route, Cape Town etc.  Post-conference trips may include safaris, whale watching, wine-tasting etc. The conference will provide a great opportunity to plan a holiday in South Africa.
